Welcome!

from Linda Robb, Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Marine Science degree course

Linda Robb

"SAMS is a unique place to study. Rather than in a campus university, our students study in a dynamic research laboratory of international standing and are taught by expert researchers from every area of marine science. Being embedded in a research culture gives our students unprecedented access to up-to-the-minute knowledge, to the latest research equipment, and provides them with opportunities to get involved in exciting research projects during their undergraduate studies.

We only accept small numbers of students each year. Studying in small groups allows the course to include more fieldwork, laboratory sessions and in-depth discussions than would be possible with a large student body. It also means students receive much feedback and can become the best they can be.

The environment at SAMS UHI is very friendly and inclusive. Although there is no student union and Oban is only a small town, our students enjoy an active social life and many get involved with the adventurous outdoor lifestyle that is so popular at the west coast of Scotland.

On this site, we introduce you to what you will learn if you come onto the course, to the structure of the course, and provide some practical information about SAMS, UHI and the area. Visit the pages about careers in marine science to find out what kind of jobs you may be able to get into after you graduate.

  • Mature and international students can get specific unformation by clicking here.
  • If you wish to arrange a visit to SAMS, which we suggest any potential student to consider seriously, please contact us.

I hope that you will consider SAMS UHI as a place to study and I look forward to welcoming you."
